I believe in my heart, way down at the bottom of my broken heart, that there will be a Wyland’s Law. So, for those of you old enough to remember the movie, “Field of Dreams”… Kevin Costner’s character, Ray, hears a mysterious voice saying, “If you build it, he will come.” Here is my ‘baseball diamond’ - so to speak. Maybe, if I ‘build’ this audience, Wyland’s Law will be more than just a dream, it will become a reality to help save the lives of children.
See introduction below of JOSEPH M. ALIOTO JR. He and I are working together to identify what Wyland’s Law will encompass.
Joe is a veteran trial lawyer, decorated former federal prosecutor, and resolute civil litigator. For over two decades he has been a stalwart defender of victims of crime, consumers, small businesses, and individuals who have been abused by large, powerful, or well-heeled Goliaths.

Joe is a veteran trial lawyer, decorated former federal prosecutor, and resolute civil litigator. For over two decades he has been a stalwart defender of victims of crime, consumers, small businesses, and individuals who have been abused by large, powerful, or well-heeled Goliaths.
Joe is a native San Franciscan and an active member of his community. He is a board member of RescueSF, a city-wide coalition that advances concrete solutions for ending homelessness. In addition to working pro bono with Giffords, Joe also volunteers his legal services to the Natural Resources Defense Council. In 2020, he was appointed by Governor Newsom to the board of California’s State Coastal Conservancy, a state commission charged with conserving California’s coastline.

And so it begins, Joe filed a lawsuit on my behalf. It was filed in the San Francisco County Superior Court against the California Department of Justice. The suit seeks to force the department to comply with the California public records act and disclose the records detailing the background check that allowed Vic to purchase the gun used to murder Wyland. He was legally prohibited by a state court to possess firearms. Read the petition in its entirety here.
Just like Wyland, Pierce Hu was tragically taken due to gun violence. His mother, Lesley, is turning her pain into action.
Pierce’s Pledge is a non-profit organization whose mission is to keep children safe during the stressful and emotionally volatile time of custody disputes. We believe that by storing guns outside of the home during these times, we can do just that. We represent a voice and advocate for the child and work with lawyers, mediators, custody partners and judges. A child can’t ask a parent to store a gun, but we can.
I am fortunate to call Lesley my friend. I am now part of the Pierce's Pledge team, together will are advocating to help save children.
In the past decade, filicide during court custody trials has been on the rise. On average, ONE CHILD A WEEK is murdered by a parent or step-parent during divorce, separation, child support, visitation, or custody negotiations. Many of these tragic events occur during ongoing legal disputes. We can do better.
